Because of the very legitimate fear of SIDS, Mather always has to sleep on her back. However, in order to develop her neck muscles and stimulate the crawling instincts, she needs supervised play time on her belly. We call this Tummy Time!

Looking at that photo, I remember, softly, caring for little Sara Dawson (New Zealand) at that age. Her mommy had been my host-sister when I was a foreign exchange student in NZ, and later came to visit me in the States. Neither she nor I knew anything of SIDS and so little Sara always slept on her belly -- but would not go to sleep unless one of us stood by her bed with a hand resting gently on her little back... Remove the hand, and Sara would awaken. We took to slipping a small stuffed toy in place of a hand, and that worked. Little Sara is now 38 and pregnant for the first time! Her turn, now.
